Pharmaceutical Sector Carbon Footprint

More than 200 companies represent the global pharmaceutical market, yet only 25 have consistently reported their direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions in the past five years.

In 2015, the pharma sector accounted for 52 megatonnes of CO2e compared to 46.4 megatonnes generated by the automotive sector.

The pharma market is 28 per cent smaller yet 13 per cent more polluting than the automotive sector. The emission intensity varies greatly within the pharmaceutical sector.

Pharmaceutical companies have a long way to go to achieve greenhouse gas emissions targets established by the 2016 Paris Climate agreement. To reach 2025 targets, the overall sector would need to reduce emissions by about 59 percent from 2015 levels.

Data Centres make up 45 % of this footprint and 24% of network infrastructure. Tech sector GHG emission is set to increase to 14 % by 2040, accounting for more than half of the current contribution of the whole transportation sector!
